Engraving slate?

To be able to engrave "SLATE" you need a diamond drag bit, a ones off investment but with endless possibilities like engraving all sorts of oddball materials including granite, glass, metal, plexiglass ect

Tool Maintenance

The cutters should be kept sharp. Chipping or overheating will occur with a dull cutter. Both will impart stress.

Step by Step Guide For Glazing - By Tim Merrill

This guide will take you through each step and discuss techniques, tools and materials. For a 3D model, I have chosen the Wolf Head from Vector Art 3D. This model was chosen for three reasons: Its final appearance is greatly improved by glazing (my opinion), the detail is enough to be a challenge, and it is one of the included 3D clip-art models with Vectric's Aspire.

Q: Can you give me a short explanation on how this is done?

"FLAT DEPTH" option

Picture
By selecting the FLAT DEPTH option you restricted the DEPTH OF CUT to the depth you desire

WARNING!!!

Picture
This will be the result without selecting the         "FLAT DEPTH" option - You will cut thru the job!

Tool-path => 1

Picture
The End Mill cutter will not only reduce the cutting time it will also make the job look neater at the bottom (The large Blue area on your left)

Note: By selecting the ' Use FLAT Area Clearance Tool ' option it will automatically create the second Tool-path and cutter option - In this case the END MILL

Tool-path => 2

Picture
Finish off with the V-Bit cutter

NOTE: The V-Bit cutter will remove what the end mill cutter has left, note the difference in cut especially in the corners between the two cutters on the image below.

This can be cut without the option of using the FLAT Area Clearance Tool ...But it will  take the V-Bit cutter  FOREVER!!!
